ASHRAE 55: THERMAL ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS FOR HUMAN OCCUPANCY
The purpose of the standard is: to specify the combinations of indoor space environment and personal factors that will produce thermal environment conditions acceptable to 80% or more of the occupants within a space The scope of the standard is as follows:
* the environmental factors addressed are temperature, thermal radiation, humidity, and air speed; the personal factors are those of activity and clothing
* it is intended that all of the criteria in the standard be applied together, since comfort in the space environment is complex and responds to the interaction of all the factors that are addressed
* standard specifies thermal environment conditions acceptable for healthy people at atmospheric pressure equivalent to altitudes up to 3000 m in indoor spaces designated for human occupancy for periods not less than 15 minutes
* the standard does not address such non-thermal environmental factors as air quality, acoustics, and illumination nor other physical, chemical, or biological space contaminants that may affect comfort or health
